Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/10/2008

Number: 1

Frost 20 miles north of us last nite. Hanging out wash around 8 AM results in very cold fingers. Quiet - no chitters, scolding or buzzing flybys. Coming home at 1 PM; no small green bodies to dodge. My daughter, notices the quiet around her yard, too. Hummingbird season is officially over here. Watching the news, seeing the great spider sprawl of Hurricane Ike; I wonder how many miles tiny birds cover in a day and say a prayer. I think of Chatterbox, a tiny female with a distinct personality. We enjoyed her visits for 6 years, then she didn't return after one such hurricane. Maybe they won't arrive in Texas until after Hurricane Ike passes thru. I know they mass in parts of the Texas coast before traveling across the Gulf to Mexico. Fingers crossed that they're timing is right...
