Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/10/2008

Number: 100

At 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday I noticed clusters of monarch butterflies in our old silver maple tree. They were about 10 - 30 or more in a cluster. Sometimes one would fly off and circle in the yard and then roost again. When a butterfly would come in to roost the others would flap their wings but remain roosted.

A thunderstorm blew through this morning and I did not see them as I glanced over to leave for work. They may have gone elsewhere or deeper into the tree. They were there when I went to bed around 10:00 Wednesday night so I know they roosted.

Two years ago they were roosting in the same tree, but for some reason I didn't see any last year (might have missed them).

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 100 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “clusters of monarch:about 10 - 30 or more in a cluster.”
