Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/14/2008

Number: 1

A pair of hummingbirds were playing in the dripping sunflowers outside the kitchen window early this morning. The hen is a noisy gal chattering constantly as she flies. Occasionally, the male replies but can't seem to keep up the conversation... They appear to be migrators and have staked out the backyard crabapple as a command center. They would like to use the feeder by the backdoor but can't get up the nerve. They zip around the yard in wide circles, pausing on the clothesline. I love the sound of their wings, hers light and his heavy like a small helicopter. Silently, the hummingbird I noticed on Thursday shadows them. Maybe it will follow them southYesterday it rained all day and as remmnants of Ike drift up, the weather remains pretty drizzly and around 70 degrees.
