Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/17/2008

Number: 200

It has been about 5 years since our first sighting and they are back today. Two very tall trees at the back of our yard are heavily covered in milkweed. (Note: This milkweed is called Sand Vine, Cynanchum laeve. It is not in the genus Asclepias but is a milkweed and monarch larvae will eat it.)
These trees are a favorite stop for monarchs. Hundreds of them land on the trees and are not visible until they flap their wings. It looks as if the trees are flying up when they take off all at once. Still watching and waiting for that awesome sight of take off.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 200 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “hundreds.”
