Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/18/2008

Number: 1

Just moved into a new home within the Atascocita area. First thing I did was replant my milkweeds since I knew migration was almost upon us. Then, of course Hurricane Ike descended upon us. All my plants survived, although I haven't seen any local Monarchs at all yet since. However, upon inspection of my plants last night, I was pleasantly surprised to find one caterpillar happily feeding away so he/she probably survived the hurricane. The bird life is slowly returning to the garden so I will be watching out for my Monarch friends this weekend especially since the temps are supposed to creep up. No power at my house yet so life is pretty basic but house and family survived.
I left milkweed plants at my old house and took time to educate my renters about these plants and my Monarch friends. With a lot of damage at that house, the day after Ike I went over to view the damage. While they were busy cutting down many fallen trees and clearing debris, they were excited to tell me that a Monarch had hatched the day before Ike. I was thrilled that my small attempts at educating them had been successful and we have another supporter of our dear Monarch friends! Wonder where that Monarch went though?
