Migrating monarch butterflies continued to pour in from the north at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge. In a half hour startng at 9 a.m., we counted more than 350 monarchs coming in to nectar in stands of sawtooth sunflowers and flying and floating across the big bluestem grasses. The day was calm, sunny, and warm, and monarchs were spotted elsewhere, too, in significant numbers in the refuge. During 3 1/2 hours of observations, we counted 1002 monarchs.
