Monarch butterflies continued to fly in from the north at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge. During nearly four hours of observations in the morning, 527 monarchs were counted. In addition to the movement in from the north, a number of monarchs appeared to be coming up out of the big bluestem grasses where they had spent the night. Back home in our butterfly garden in Altoona, Iowa, 10 monarchs put on a beautiful show in the afternoon when nectaring together on the purple asters.
