While driving west on the QEW Highway between Trafalgar Avenue and Burloak Drive at 5:45 PM, Sept 22nd 2008, I spotted what at first appeared to be several clouds of smoke above the trees on the south side of the highway. When traffic came to a complete stop it was possible to see that the "clouds" were not smoke but rather enormous clusters of large flying insects that were probably Monarch butterflies seeking a roost for the night. There were literally dozens of these clouds the full length of the highway. With the exception of a very diffuse cloud on the edge of Bronte Creek Provincial Park, all the clouds were on the south side of the QEW/403 highway. (Editor's note: more than likely not monarchs, maybe dragonflies since they have been seen in large numbers in ON lately.)
