Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/22/2008

Number: 25

I visited Hammonasset State Park in Madison, CT with an afterschool nature club from Bauer Park Nature Center. Our purpose was to tag Monarchs. It was cloudy, windy, and cool, so we were not very optimistic! However, I did see a couple as I drove in, so I knew they were there.

We were there for a little over an hour, and we saw at least 50 Monarchs flying, PLUS a small roost--about 25 Monarchs 15-20 feet up in a pine tree about 100 feet from the shoreline!

We then went up to tag the butterflies we had caught (didn't disturb the roost), and the kids reported that butterflies were beginning to roost in a pine tree next to the butterfly garden.

We only tagged 8 butterflies, but it was definitely a successful outing!
