Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/23/2008

Number: 1

I previously reported sighting a monarch on my butterfly weed plant. Recently I "rescued" six catepillars on the plant from predators and have green chrysallises hanging from a board, waiting for the butterflies to emerge. Two days ago I watched a monarch laying eggs on the same plant. This happened also last year, and I had two butterflies to release.

The last few days I have seen several monarchs each day in W. Pensacola and East Alabama (just over the Perdido Bay bridge). They migrate through the area each year, just west of Pensacola, especially near Ft. Morgan, Alabama, Mobile Bay, and Gulf Shores beaches. Maybe these are the "advance party".
