Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/24/2008

Number: 1

At the end of August we counted 53 monarch caterpillars on the butterfly weed in one day. We started giving some cataerpillers to reliable friends who had butterfly weed as the caterpillars were consuming the milk weed at an astonishing rate. We have had multiple monarchs in the yard for sometime now. Fortunately the butterfly weed is starting to grow back leaves. I am surprised that more people in the San Diego/El Cajon area of California have not reported sightings. It has been very exciting. It is difficult to count the butterflies as we do not know if we are recounting the same ones.
