Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/26/2008

Number: 1

We may not have any "peak migration" this year. Several best days for the 2008 season were 2 monarchs only. Today at 1335 we observed a single monarch approach the southwest shore of Unity Pond at 12 m height moving SSW on a N or NNE breeze of 5-6 m/h. This butterfly must have just crossed the lake on a path at least 2 mile above open water. This is the first monarch we observed since 17 SEP 2008. Several days since 18 SEP have started with cool temps of 27-34 F. This morning was mild at 40 F, but the day has been mostly cloudy although not yet raining. The monarch we observed will experience 2 storms along its path as well as the fringes of tropical storm Kyle in the next 48 hours.
