Signs of Fall

Date: 09/28/2008

Number: 1

As we were coming back from Panama City, we were crossing the bridge on a motorcycle and all these butterflies were flying around. the car in front of us hit some as I saw them fall dead to the side... I felt so sad. We dodged them as best we could! But once we crossed the bridge... there was 'maybe' a dozen... and a little bit further - a bunch of yellow butterflies. But I would guess on the bridge there were at least 250 butterflies !

Editor's note: The Gulf fritillary, a monarch look-a-like, is one of several migratory species in the Southeast. As fall approaches, adults begin a mass southward migration eventually arriving in South Florida to overwinter.
