Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/30/2008

Number: 300

My Dad and I went out from about 6:45-7:20 p.m. We watched about 300 monarchs come in to roost in 4 different trees next to the house. An Oak, a Sweetgum, a Hackberry, and a Cottonwood. The Cottonwood and Oak are the largest, and have the majority of butterflies. Most followed the creek, and came in from the east from the direction of the R. R. tracks that border our eastern property line. I would guess about 100 came straight in from the north over the house and flew into the tree line next to the house looking for a spot to land.

I spotted 3 different branches where there were 10 or more monarchs within inches of each other.
