Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/24/2008

Number: 1

Today our third grade released 123 monarchs. They had been collected as caterpillars on Labor Day weekend in the Allegheny National Forest and Cook Forest area. They were carefully cared for as caterpillars in our greenhouse classroom and watched over as chrysalises. When they eclosed they were tagged and released in our butterfly tent in our garden. They flitted from flower to flower sipping nectar. One couple even mated! It was 84 degrees on Wednesday when we released them. They were anxious to fly.
