Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/05/2008

Number: 1

I have a senior level biogeography class monitoring monarchs this fall. We have transects and stations throughout our city. Unfortunately, we haven't
seen many butterflies. The class complained about the numbers of hours
without sightings, so we stopped the official count last week, only to find

the maximum numbers on Sunday.
It was the largest number of migrating monarchs seen in a day so far this fall.

Over the weekend, folks at the JMU field hockey matches reported seeing monarchs everywhere. Yesterday, at the JMU golf challenge, golfers reported seeing about 2 dozen during their 18 holes (3.5 hours). I saw an average of 10 per hour (in my yard/garden...I'm a power gardener) and that lasted for 5 hours.
