Town of Cole, Oklahoma community volunteers established butterfly gardens in their community to provide habitat and improve education of the importance of milkweed in their rural farming community. Cole, central in the migration flyway, by its efforts to improve Monarch habitat and education, was proclaimed "Monarch Capital of Oklahoma" in July, '08. The town held its first annual Monarch Migration and Butterfly festival Oct 4th. It was a resounding success with over 400 people attending (matching the population of the town itself!) We will expand our gardens for next years festival, and share our knowledge and seeds with everyone to begin their own butterfly gardens!!
