Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/08/2008

Number: 1

Including my two other reports today (King George and Dahlgren)I saw a total of 25 monarchs --22 total in my yard on Mathias Point along the east bank of the Potomac River (river is 3 miles wide)21 of butterflies were seen between 3 and 5:15pm Monarchs 17 to 25 stopped to feed- #17 on a pink Ohio buckeye tree flower (tree confused-put out a few flowers this fall),#'s 18 & 19 & 25 on purple butterfly bush, rest were on lilac colored asters. A yellow hornet began attacking the ones on the asters--I knocked him off 3 different monarchs--unfortunately couldn't kill it.I had not seen this behavior before. One monarch appeared stunned by the attack and did not fly on. A neighbor burned a tree with hornet's nest in it this week--don't know if this caused behavior observed.
