Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/11/2008

Number: 500

I went on a hike in Seminole Canyon state park on Saturday October 11 and saw several monarchs both in Seminole Canyon and Spring Canyon. They were mostly in oak trees on the canyon floor, although a few were braving the winds out of the south with little luck. The trees in Spring Canyon (which goes in a east westerly direction) only had 100 or so monarchs per tree. The trees in Seminole Canyon (north-south direction) had 200-500 monarchs per tree. There were no signs of monarchs outside the canyons. Up top the winds were even stronger and there are few trees to offer protection.
