Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/13/2008

Number: 1

I have been an Interpretive Park Ranger on Spectacle Island, part of the Boston Harbor National Recreational Area all Summer. I have reported a few sightings of Monarchs during the Summer including our earliest which was in June (probably an adult from overwintering chrysalus). Since the Monday after Labor Day, I have been the groundskeeper on Spectacle Island. On Monday, October 13, 2008, a large number of Monarchs had arrive in the last few days. I saw approximately 100 to 125 in fields of asters. Unfortunately I do not know the spoecies of asters but I will find out. Last year when a large number were seen by me and a High School Field Group at Lovells Island (another Island in the BHNRA)in the Seaside Goldenrod, it was the same time. The Seaside Goldenrod has seemed to have prematurely died back. I won't be able to make any more observations this Season as the boats have been discontinued as of this past Monday.
