Signs of Fall

Date: 10/15/2008

Number: 1

We were walking on the beach at Palmetto Dunes in Hilton Head, SC this morning and saw swarms of butterflies moving southward down the beach. The butterflies were moving along the upper beach line where the sea grasses/sea oats grow.

Editor's Note: These butterflies are probably the Gulf fritillary, a monarch look-a-like species and one of several migratory species in the Southeast. As fall approaches, adult Gulf fritillaries begin a mass southward migration eventually arriving in South Florida to overwinter.
