We saw a flock of 30 Whooping Cranes at Davis Lake. We were there for 2 days and so were the birds. I know this is unbelievable information, and we are returning again this year with desperate hopes of seeing and documenting them. We got a photo of the flock in flight from across the lake, so certain ID is difficult or impossible without enlisting NASA (who I suspect will think they have more important things to do, though I disagree!).
The birds were gathered on the grassy shore of this lake known for it's abundance of wildlife. We were in kayaks maybe less than 1/2 mile away. I put the binoculars on these giant white birds who were trilling like Sandhill Cranes, and to my incredulity I saw whooping cranes.
