Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/16/2008

Number: 1

Today was another good Monarch day. As before, I was out doing the hawk-watch, but counted passing Monarchs as well. A couple of hours, my butterfly count was not so good, because I was concentrating on trying to find birds, but I still logged 478 Monarchs for the day. I know there were many more than this. My highest hour was 10 - 11 AM, when I counted 161 butterflies. In 7.5 hours, the average was 64 butterflies per hour.

An interesting sight for me was a group of about 14 Monarchs in a "kettle", much like the hawks. It was quite windy all day, so I was surprised to see the butterflies doing this.
