Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/10/2008

Number: 500

oct 10 2008 Just after noon I was delivering a horse and to avoid a cattleguard crossing we took a less traveled loop and all of a sudden the air was full of Monarchs. Pokey(the horse) and I were awestrucken. We stayed for 30 minutes and noted them returning to roost in many different trees in that small area: live oak (living and dead branches) Mexican buckeye, eve's necklace, pecan trees and cedar oak. a few were nectering on frost plant. I returned two or three times a day from that Fri-Mon. Sunday I heard of and explored other sights similar in numbers (hundreds each) here at Hill Country State Natural area. One area was reported where a trail ride went through a massive stand of yellow Maxmillian daisies. Something they will never forget. Other people reported seeing them here through Tues oct 14 and one photographed with a great camera. Got pictures that day but they were all gone on Wed Oct 15 by noon. None could be found on Thurs October 16 and we all miss them.

Editor's Note: This observer did not specify the number of monarchs present. We entered '500' in the number field based on observer’s of "hundreds" at various sites.
