Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/18/2008

Number: 150

On land we own in far west Jack County, we saw Monarchs moving both Oct. 17 and Oct. 18, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in numbers of approx. 50 per hour. It was sunny & calm evening both days with a very light north wind. We are sure they were flying in to roost for the night, as we have seen them roosting in years past in large numbers in the big oak trees growing on prairie grasslands on our property. TONS of wild aster and still some gayfeathers in bloom right now, along with other wildflowers.

Editor's Note: This observer did not specify the number of monarchs present. We entered '150' in the number field based on observer’s “from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in numbers of approx. 50 per hour.”
