Signs of Fall

Date: 11/08/2008

Number: 1

At about 0900 on 08 November 2008 we observed a mature Common Loon fishing and cruising on the Clark Fork River 1 mile east of the confluence with Lake PendOreille,in winter plumage. No mate was observed.First notice came from a short vocal call.It would seem that the Loon was way farther north than normal for this time of the year.We have wondered for some time if there might be mating pair nesting on the river delta here. The habitat includes the level low lying grassland required for the habitat. We wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this observation.George Cordingly
