What an adventure! Our neighbors across the street have lovely gardens, so I dug in merrily, optimistic about our garden design. It turns out they completely refilled their front yard to replace the clay. Doh! It rained the day after I dug, and we had a lovely pool in our front yard that didn't drain for over a week.
After weeks (yes, weeks) of experimenting with different soil amendments, the kids and I refilled the garden and created a raised bed. Victory! Fifty bulbs planted in full sun, away from any buildings, and theoretically in a bed with decent drainage. Time will tell and our fingers are crossed!
