Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 12/15/2008

Number: 1

Several hummers feeding in backyard during first blizzard of season. Have been changing feeders fairly often (in spite of furious inspections of hummers). The temperature is below 27 degrees and I'm concerned the cold/snow is too much for them. One appears to be sitting in my Clarodendron tree, even in the blowing snow, and feeding sporadically, then reperching (guarding his feeder, I assume). I'm hoping he will spend the night in one of the cedars or arborvitae, out of the bitter cold. Seems to recognize me as the "feeder fixer" and he isn't afraid of me being close to him.

12/26 Update

Continue to feed at one ruby-throated hummingbird throughout the worst weather in years (snow/ice). Friend less than 1 mile reports many Anna Hummingbirds in his yard. My hummingbird goes between an old apple tree, a tall arborvitae, a cedar and my claradendron tree and is quite active. Definite dark scarlet neck, brilliant green head/back.
