Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 12/16/2008

Number: 1

I've a hummer that doesn't want to leave for winter it seems. Like another poster in Oregon, I too have had keep a watchful eye on his "precious" feeder, due to sub-freezing temps (teens at night and 25 or so in the day). I've been bringing her feeder in at night to prevent freezing and hanging it back up the next Am.M. and like that previous poster, my hummer seems to recognize me as the feeder-tender. She is not the only hummer still hanging around though, as she fearlessly chases awway any other hummer that even thinks of getting a quick lick. Yesterday, she sat in one place on my patio so long, her droppings were a pink, frozen icicle on the christmas lights beneath her. I do hope the cold ends soon (next week, maybe?) as I'm concerned she may not make it. Lord knows there is plenty of dead fauna in Portland now as a result of this bitter cold, but again, hopefully, nature isn't killing off a few hummers that won't be needed in the spring.
