During a visit to Vail, CO, from 12/17/08 to 1/4/09, I observed a number of active robins nearly every day. I live in Wisconsin, where I never see a robin until spring arrives, so I inquired about the presence of the robins in Vail's cold, snowy climate. The explanation, I was told, was simple: the heated driveways and sidewalks make the soil alongside warm and moist, easy for scratching for worms. Sure enough. Every day home and shop owners have to sweep the scratched earth back into place after the robins have done their digging! Yet another example of nature adapting to human "progress."
