December 11, 2008 Third graders at AWS planted their tulip bulbs in the cold rain. We wanted to get the bulbs in the ground before the predicted snows came. We did, but we were very cold. The outside temperature was around 38-42 F, the soil temperature was 47F. The very next week the snows did come and school was cancelled for a few days. We hoped that the snow would help insulate the newly planted bulbs.
Today January 8 after many days of rain and lots of puddles and some flooding, we checked our tulip beds again. The outside temperature was 44F and the soil temperature was 47.4F. We noticed that the soil temperature did not change much with the snow and all. We did find a bulb that was now on the surface. We wondered if a squirrel did that or the heavy rains.
