Today was one of the coldest days in 6 years. It was 29 degrees F when we went outside to make our observations. Skies were blue with no clouds. Today we will have 10 hours and 8 minutes of daylight. Almost all of the trees have lost their leaves: evergreens are still green, some oaks still have brown leaves, and the beech have sandy, brown leaves. We saw and heard several birds: a woodpecker in a tree pecking for bugs, and a small flock of brown birds eating on the schoolyard. We also saw that several trees on our nature trail had fallen down because of wind. We saw a squirrel nest in a tree. We found ice on the ground under a branch and under benches. The grass was dry and crunchy because of the frost we’ve had. These are not signs of spring… they are signs of winter!!!
