Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/06/2009

Number: 1

Friends who live along the Gulf of Mexico coast have been reporting monarchs (and flowering milkweeds) throughout the winter. I also get continuing reports of them being seen at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge (also on the coast), some of these reports have been from refuge rangers.

I have seen fresh monarchs on two visits to the refuge, once in December and a second time on January 1st. I counted six, in three separate locations, during the second visit.

We've had a record-breaking cold wave the past couple of nights, so I don't know if the monarchs and milkweeds down there have survived the freeze.
