Staff at the Virginia Living Museum just noticed that the first Journey North tulips planted in the museum's Children's Learning Garden emerged today. The Children’s Learning Garden began with Journey North tulips planted in Fall 1998. The tallest tulip had leaves that reached about 3 inches above the soil surface, one other had leaves about 2 inches above the surface. The rest of the tulips that survived the local squirrels were just visible above the soil surface. One tulip was found sprouting in the compost bins on the other side of the garden & was replanted with the other tulips. It may have been a tulip from last year or dropped by a squirrel after it was dug out from the bed. The squirrels love to raid the compost bins for scraps.
