Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 02/09/2009

Number: 1

The sun is shining and the icicles are dripping... the temperature is +4, and I saw a pair of ravens dancing in the air - a sure sign of sap time. The road has become muddy where the snow has melted. I tapped two trees today - 6 taps! The tree by the road is my 'medicine' tree and I use that sap as a spring medicine, just as my anishinabe grandmothers have done for thousands of years. The sap ran well today - I picked up 2 preserving jars of sap. Every day I will drink a small glass of sap - what a great gift from inninatig- the maple! we won't tap any more trees right now because the long-term forecast looks cool, cloudy, and rainy.
