I actually started this year's Unpave the Way project this fall. After my hummers leave and the temps turn cooler I rehang my seed feeder. As food becomes more scarce and and the temps drop, I also make and fill my suet cake feeders. This year I added a thistle feeder when I saw that a few of American Goldfinches decided to spend the winter here. Yes I also feed the squirrels when the weather is severe and they have a hard time finding food. I save all the old stale bread and toast, dry and cut it into small squares. I then cover it with peanut butter and dip the squares into cracked corn. The squirrels are thankful and leave my bird feeders alone.

On Feb. 5th. I started sowing my seeds for this year's hummer garden. So far I have started Silene virginica, crossvine, Cuphea shumannii, Salvia greggii, Salvia reptans, Salvia coccinea, Native Lupine and I have several cuttings going of Cuphea ignea David Verity, Salvia Black & Rouge, Salvia penstemonoides. Agastache Apricot Sprite, and Dicliptera suberecta in addition to some large overwintered hummer plants.
