Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/25/2009

Number: 1

Today has hit 50 degrees in West Point, IN in Tippecanoe County. It was my first day out in the wildlife habitat area spreading milkweed seeds and cleaning up debris. While out on the acreage, I heard an old familiar song I hadn't heard since fall - the unmistakable call of the red wing blackbird. I looked in the direction of the call and there was a male perched on a giant ragweed stalk. Nearby was another male, and it wasn't long before I saw a female as well. So they were my first, second and third sitings.

On further exploration that wasn't likely a female red-winged blackbird because they migrate north later than males. My bird identification isn't as good for females as it is for males. I do believe those were migratory males however, as I have not seen any red-winged blackbirds all winter.
