Friday afternoon: We went looking for Ascelpias viridis (found none) west of town and were discouraged by the lack of spring plants that are up or showing leaves. Corn fields were bedded and should have been planted two weeks ago, the ground is plenty warm but there has been no rain since last October of any good measure and with no hint of rain the farmers aren't going to plant dry. The drought is going to be a year long for us here along the midcoast of Texas and is bad news for the spring monarchs. The conditions will be devastating especially to the milkweeds and the spring wildflowers that are nectar sources from here to San Antonio/Austin west to Eagle Pass and down to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas ... the area that the monarchs are going to be remigrating thru out of Mexico over the next couple of months. Once the remigrants get past this area things will get slowly get greener for them as more rain has fallen to the northeast of us.
