7:30 AM, the first pair of robins for 2009 flew past my head from the maple in the side yard. It suprised me to hear their happy robin challenge call. They flew out into the meadow in the dim light and mist. I imagine looking for a soft spot where yesterday's warm sun brought up some worms. The backyard crabapple tree is still heavily covered with fruit despite repeated assaults by the cedar waxwing platoon. So hopefully, they can exist on fruit till the worms wake up. The moles are busy back in the glade pushing up odd towers as they prod the grubs and worms out of hiding, so spring is nearly here. At least the robins won't have to set their clocks ahead!
