All Other Signs of Spring

It was sunny and 61 degrees at 8:15 am in San Diego. We have been watching a sweet gum tree outside of our class for the last two weeks waiting for the leaves to appear. Today the first leaf bud burst open. It had four tiny palmate leaves connected to the branch. They looked just like the big leaves that were on the tree in Aug. when we started school. The class predicted that the new leaves would have to grow into palmate leaves. We learned that they come out as palmates already, only super small. We think more will pop open tomorrow.
