Barn Swallow (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/18/2009

Number: 1

I saw several swallows yesterday, mostly in flight, sometimes sitting on the power lines. I observed them through the windows to my backyard. I have had swallows nest on my back patio for the past 3 years. So far, each year they have returned and have used the nest started 3 years ago. Tonight I noticed one sitting on the nest. I guess the vacancy has been filled. The first year, there were 4 babies, second year only 2 survived. Last year, there were 3, my daughter found a dead hatchling on the ground. They have been arriving in mid-March. I don't know much about birds. But, I have really enjoyed watching them breed, teach their young to fly(groups of adults will assist)and love their skill in aviation.
