I awoke just after the sun came up to hear my favourite bird singing in the heartnut tree by the back door - the PHOEBE is back again - YIPPEE!!! Last year he arrived March 6 and I have looked and listened every morning. The temp. yesterday was quite warm +9C and the sap ran really well - but there are signs that sap season is coming to an end. some of the buckets are cloudy today. the snow is almost all gone from the bush. lots of flies sitting on the porch railing in the sun. no turkey vultures yet (they are late arriving) but there are a couple of pairs of canada geese calling from the pond - pond is still frozen with meltwater on top.
