Many small Monarchs (Painted Ladies) headed north with a brisk nort wind. The butterflies flow low, about 6 to 10 feet to be bleow the huse and trees and avoid the higher wind at higher altitudes. They flew singly or sometimes two together. I would guess their speed to by about 3 mph.they appeared about 3 minutes apart, not in clouds of many. Quite intent, they found their way around trees and over walls and houses with no deviation.
