ah - it's thunder and lightning this morning in the sugar bush - a steady gentle rain since 9:00 last night - looks like the sap season is winding down. we were 2 weeks early this year and we bottled 46 litres of maple magic (that's about 5 litres less than last year but we donated a couple of barrels of sap to our new-best-grandfriend down the road - an 85 year old retired farmer who bought a small evaporator and did not have 'permission' from his kids to go out everyday to pick up sap... we think we have made a really good friend- he is boiling sap and sharing it with the grade 3-4 kids at Sacred Heart school - they have opened up the sugar bush with 20 taps!! I am hoping the cold weather that is promised for tuesday will bring the sap back- but the moths and the bees are out and about and some of the buckets are giving cloudy sap.
