We live in Napa, Calif. It is 4:50 p.m now on March 31, 2009....for the last hour there have been(what we believe to be) Painted Lady butterflies by the hundreds moving from south to north down our street. They enter from the southwest end of the street...fly down the street and exit over the roofs northeast. We stood outside and let them fly all around us and they are orange and black and appear to have the monarch markings on them. What an amazing site!! They were flying apart...not in a close group but 5-10 at a time but following a definate path!!
