Our tulips are emerging! I went out only yesterday to check and found a slab of ice on top of the garden. Our yard is one of the few that still had snow. We're in a different microclimate than that in our town which is 4 miles away and at a lower elevation (530 feet vs. 1,240 feet). We always watch the car thermometer as we drive home. It's regularly 5 degrees colder at home than in town. The elevation is one factor; we're also on the north side of a hill and in the woods so we have limited sunshine.
On Friday, April 3rd the 2nd set of tulips I planted emerged. These are beside our house and while they're on the south side they are also under a section of the roof that dumps snow into a huge pile beneath the roof. It took one extra day for the snow to melt here and the tulips were literally forcing their way through the icy, hard-packed now.
