Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/03/2009

Number: 1

Today is a beautiful spring day; 70 degrees, sunny, and breezy. On my morning walk, my dog's nose ran smack into a large monarch butterfly. It flew onto a weed beside the road, and I stopped to look at it. It sat for a few moments and flew off; we followed for a little while and watched it until we had to go on our way. This is the first monarch we've seen so far this spring, and it was traveling alone as far as I could tell. Later, as I passed the same area where we saw the butterfly (a woodsy area about .10 mile from the Escambia bay), I saw a small orange butterfly that looked a lot like a monarch, but I couldn't tell for sure...it was 1/2 the size of the large, definite monarch I'd seen just a few minutes before. So that could possibly be the 2nd monarch sighting, but I can't say 100% that it was indeed a monarch.
