I have kept a record when rufous hummingbirds arrive at our feeder location, for last 10 years.
Mar 23/01; Mar 22/02; Mar 14/03
Mar 21/04; Mar 9/05; Mar 24/06
Mar 26/07; Mar 26/07; Mar 21/07
Mar 13/09
Males are first to arrive and females appear about a week latter.
The remarkable thing is that they must remember the exact location of our feeder as they check the wire support for the feeder. I do not fill the feeder until after they first appear.
It would be very interesting to know how they accomplish this after such a long migration. I need a map or GPS to find address for locations only short distance from our home.
There are no blossoms out in our area at that time so I assume they feed on insects and appear to be very hungry, so it's nice to assume they appreciate our feeder.
