Early ice-out on Big Tupper Lake and Lake Simond have the residents and migrants alike cruising for forage. Two immatures were seen almost stationery in flight today, riding the steady winds blowing across the Tupper Lake Marsh and causeway. They seemed too young (and too low to the ground)to cavort in courtship but they were apparently practicing, at least. Great show for about five minutes delayed by return to work after lunch. Another immature fed on the remains of a deer in the flow just off the new State observation lot. Our mated pair has been on the nest for at least three weeks now, and mom's head is regularly visible with her expectant mate attending her nicely. The recent snows and cold weather must be a real challange to nesting birds. Out front here at Lake Simond, an immature picked up an errant dead bullhead on Saturday morning, seen while I was tending to our docks which wind-driven ice flows had wrecked the night before.
