Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/09/2009

Number: 1

One lone Monarch appeared in my yard last week. We lost almost all of our milkweed two summers ago in the drought. The plants that came up this year are about 8 inches tall - some with barely 4 leaves. I went out to check on it and found leaves completely covered with eggs - something I have never seen before. One tiny plant was almost completely white. At first I thought something had happened to the plant and that it was turning while. Then I observed the one Monarch hard at work.

On Sunday night, April 12, we had incredible winds for a two hour period. It was like nothing we had ever had before. No thunder and lightning - just terrible wind. I have not seen the butterfly again this week. I guess the wind must have gotten her. Just saw the posting about egg loading. Guess we are a part of that this year. Am working hard to find a source of milkweed for the caterpillars that hatch.
